An honest comparison

You could just use ChatGPT.

Fair enough, and ChatGPT is good. Here is what each alternative is genuinely better at, and the one thing none of them can do.

Every one of these makes you assemble the course first. We are the only one where the corpus already exists when you open it.

That is the whole claim. Somebody sat down and put the course together, and it was waiting there before you arrived.

One at a time

Where each one beats us.

Concessions included

Written as structural differences rather than feature checkboxes, because these products all ship changes monthly and a stale comparison is worse than none.

ChatGPT

The strongest general tool, with none of your course in it.

Better than us at

  • Far broader general knowledge than any course corpus
  • Better at drafting an essay or rewriting your prose
  • Its free tier is more generous than our 15 free Pac credits
  • Works for every subject, including ones we have not curated

What it structurally can't do

  • Starts blank. It has never seen your professor’s slides unless you upload them, every session
  • Cannot point you at a page, because it has no document to point into
  • No notion of a TBS course, so every classmate starts from zero
  • Nothing to revise from: it cannot hand you the 2023 final

NotebookLM

Does much of what Pac does, once you have done the hard part.

Better than us at

  • Genuinely good grounded answers with citations, and free
  • Works on any file you bring, for any subject
  • Google-backed, so it is not going anywhere

What it structurally can't do

  • You assemble the corpus. Every course, every semester, before you get anything
  • The hard part is finding the materials, and that is the part it does not help with
  • Your notebook is yours alone, so thirty classmates do the same work thirty times
  • No past-paper history, unless you already tracked down years of them yourself

The community Drives

They have the real materials. We are not trying to replace them.

Better than us at

  • They genuinely hold the materials, and they are free
  • Trusted, because a classmate put them there
  • Broader coverage than our catalogue, today

What it structurally can't do

  • Passive files. Nothing answers a question about them, so you open PDFs until you find the page
  • Duplicates everywhere, and no reliable way to tell which version is current
  • They decay: the folder stops being maintained when whoever built it graduates
  • No learning layer at all, which is the whole gap we exist in

A private tutor

A good tutor beats any software. That is not a close call.

Better than us at

  • Adapts to you in a way no product does
  • Notices what you have misunderstood before you do
  • Holds you accountable, which is most of why tutoring works

What it structurally can't do

  • Paid per course, by the hour
  • Scarce in exactly the weeks everyone wants one
  • Not available at 2am the night before, which is when the question arrives

Doing nothing

Honestly, the competitor we lose to most.

Better than us at

  • Free, and requires no decision today
  • What almost everyone actually does

What it structurally can't do

  • The materials still exist, scattered, and the exam still arrives
  • If a free library and fifteen Pac credits are not worth ten minutes of your evening, we would rather you kept the ten minutes than signed up out of guilt

If you already have your materials organized and a tool you like, you probably don't need us. Most students don't, and that is who this is for.
